Healing Methods
More than 30 methods I have tried since 2021, sorted by topic. With an honest assessment of what helped and what did not.
Updated: October 2026
After six years and more than thirty methods tried, people often ask me: What worked best? The honest answer is: I don't know for sure. I almost always did several things at the same time, and nobody can calculate which piece played which part. What I can say is what felt right to me and where my test results showed something.
My top three
- Exercise and Movement: my most important "medicine." For no other method is the research so clear.
- TPS: since fall 2021, once a month.
- Microbiome Transfer: After the first fecal transplant, my gut flora improved a lot, and I had the feeling that things took another step forward.
What was also important
NeuroEpo from Cuba, after which my sense of smell improved right away, and the light therapy PDCare. Also homeopathy and the health retreat on Baltrum, which gave me strength in my darkest time, my supplements and later lithium. I consider diet important, though a bit less today than I used to. And fasting-mimicking.
What did nothing for my symptoms
Not all of these methods are worthless, but I want you to know where I invested time and money without any change in my symptoms:
- Water fasting (2022): no noticeable improvement, but I still consider fasting positive for longevity
- Broccoli Seed Tea, vibration plate, SRT Zeptor: no effect, more under Other Methods in Brief
- Iboga: no change, but I would test it again
- Psilocybin: no effect on motor function, but a gain mentally
- Tanganil: no change after two years, but others report success
- HBO: good for my mood, otherwise no noticeable effect
- Stem cells: my most expensive treatment, so far with no effect on the Parkinson's
In parallel, but not at random
With what I know today, I would have started everything that seemed sensible to me and that I could afford earlier and in parallel. If you test each method on its own for half a year, five therapies take you two and a half years, and with Parkinson's you don't have that time.
Most alternative methods have hardly any side effects, other than costing time and money. But not all of them: iboga puts strain on the heart, lithium and too much selenium or vitamin B6 can cause harm, and methylene blue does not mix with certain medications. And in 2026, I learned that more is not always better. Please talk to your doctor first about anything that goes into your body.
I also know that my path takes a lot of strength. Not everyone has the energy or the means for it. If you rely mainly on treatment by your neurologist, you are taking an equally legitimate path.
All methods by topic
Drugs and Active Substances
Tanganil and N-Acetyl-L-LeucineAn old, inexpensive amino acid from France that made headlines in 2024. So far it has done nothing for me, but it remains exciting.
LithiumA trace element that might protect nerve cells at low doses. I have been taking it since 2024.- DoxycyclineAn old, inexpensive antibiotic that defuses the toxic protein clumps of Parkinson's in lab studies.
- FexofenadineAn over-the-counter allergy drug that was linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's in a large Korean analysis.
- TavapadonA new Parkinson's drug that was approved in the USA in September 2026.
PsilocybinThe active ingredient in magic mushrooms. A mental gain for me, no effect on my motor skills. Prohibited in Germany.
IbogaRoot bark from Central Africa that might stimulate a growth factor for nerve cells. With serious risks for the heart.
Supplements
- Urolithin AStimulates the self-cleaning of the cells' power plants. I have been taking it since the spring of 2026.
D-SerineAn amino acid that improved mobility and mood in a small study. For me, only temporarily.
Artemisia annuaSweet wormwood, the source of the malaria drug artemisinin. Studied in Parkinson's only in animals. I no longer take it.- Methylene BlueAn old dye that is said to support the mitochondria. I only take it at times.
- Mucuna pruriensThe velvet bean naturally contains L-dopa. Not a harmless supplement, but a remedy for later.
Gut and Microbiome
Microbiome TransferStool transplant from a healthy donor. For me, one of the three most important building blocks.
PDCare by SYMBYXLight therapy for the belly and neck that is meant to work through the gut-brain axis. I have been using it since 2021.- Propionate and ButyrateShort-chain fatty acids from the gut that improved mobility and thinking in one study.
PS128A probiotic from Taiwan that is meant to act on the brain through the gut.- Oral HealthThe mouth and the gut are closely connected. Inflammation in the mouth can burden the whole body.
Devices: Light, Current, Sound, Oxygen
TPS NeurolithSound pulses through the skull, once a month. One of my three most important building blocks since 2021.
Brain PBM (Vielight)Infrared light for the brain, through a helmet and the nose. Three times a week since 2021.
Red Light TherapyRed and infrared light for the face, chest and belly, combined with the light helmet. My weekly plan.
TMSMagnetic stimulation of the brain's movement center. Well studied, but no noticeable effect for me.- Focused UltrasoundA procedure without an incision that can greatly ease the tremor in particular. An overview.
HBO Oxygen TherapyOxygen under pressure in a chamber. Good for my mood, but an effect on Parkinson's is not proven.
Exercise and Nutrition
Exercise and MovementMy most important "medicine." For no other method is the evidence so clear.
Smovey RingsSwinging rings for arms, shoulders and coordination. Highly recommended.- IrisinThe hormone that muscles produce during exercise. It could explain why movement helps so much with Parkinson's.
Fasting and Fasting MimickingWater fasting in 2022 and fasting mimicking since 2025. Afterward I was calmer, and my tremor values were better.
DietAs natural, high in fiber and plant-based as possible. No wheat, no cow's milk, no breakfast.
Sleep, Sauna and ColdSleeping well, an infrared sauna at home, breathing exercises and, since fall 2026, an ice bath in the garden.
Mind and Holistic Approaches
TM MeditationTranscendental Meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Finding calm as a building block of its own.- Self-HealingConfidence, self-care and the feeling that you can do something yourself are real forces.
- PlaceboIn Parkinson's, expectation alone releases dopamine. I use this on purpose and check myself with measurements.
- HomeopathyAn important building block of my therapy, guided by Dr. Poppe since October 2021.
AyurvedaThe traditional medicine of India. During my retreat in 2023, I measured my lowest tremor score up to that point.- Acupuncture and TCMQigong has been part of my training for years. Soon I will start Yamamoto scalp acupuncture.
