Parkinson's without medication: a patient takes stock after six years

In December 2020, a then 50-year-old business owner from the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region is diagnosed with Parkinson's. All the doctors advise him to take medication. He decides, at least for now, on a different path and searches worldwide for alternatives. Under the pseudonym Tom Parkinson, he has now written about his experiences in his third book: "2020 bis 2026. Mein Weg ohne Medikamente" (2020 to 2026: My path without medication).

Six years after the diagnosis, most people around him notice nothing of his illness. His neurologist describes the course as "unusually favorable." In 2025 his MDS-UPDRS score was 15 points, lower than in 2021. According to analyses of large long-term studies, 26 to 30 points would have been expected on average.

"I am not helplessly at the mercy of this disease. That is the most important experience of the last six years, and I want to pass it on," says the author.

The book tells his story year by year: two treatment stays in Cuba, stool transplants, light therapy, transcranial pulse stimulation, a stem cell therapy for more than 35,000 euros and much more, with costs, measurements and excerpts from doctors' reports. A second part presents more than 30 methods for reference, and a third looks at research.

The book explicitly makes no promise of a cure. The author stresses that his course is an individual case and that his decision against medication is not a recommendation to others.
