Methylene Blue

An old dye that is said to support the mitochondria. I only take it at times.

Updated: October 2026

What is it?

Methylene blue is a blue dye that has been used in medicine for more than a hundred years, for example as an antidote for certain types of poisoning. In low doses it is said to support energy production in the mitochondria.

What does the research say?

For Parkinson's there are only lab and animal experiments. Studies in humans are missing.

Important: Together with certain antidepressants, methylene blue can trigger a dangerous serotonin syndrome. It also turns urine blue.

My experience

In 2023 I took methylene blue for a few weeks, and again in spring 2025, each time 10 drops of a 1 percent solution in the morning. I did not notice any effect on my symptoms.

My conclusion

At the moment I do not see a sufficient basis for methylene blue in Parkinson's. If you still want to try it, be sure to discuss it with a doctor.
